I love the Opening Ceremonies

I think because it reminds me, ever so faintly: this will be heaven. Every nation and ethnic group, in all their glorious and unique pageantry. But in divine and utterly complete peace, joy--and love for one another. The lights, fireworks, and costumes God will put together will surely dwarf even our most high-tech Olympic ceremonies.

Especially the costumes. Who the heck thought Ralph Lauren should design the US costumes? They were very boring and tres snooty. On the other hand, perhaps they accurately reflect how the US feels about itself right now; uptight.

I was impressed that after Kobe Bryant joins in a photo op with athletes from Bulgaria(?),
he shook the guys' hands, and you heard him ask, "How do you say thank you [in your language]?"

WooHoo! Look at me, first to comment on your new blog! I too enjoyed watching the opening ceremonies. I thought the Chinese put on a particularly good pageant. We watched until 9pm with our girls. It was fun to explain some Chinese history and culture to them. H has always had a fascination with China. I even mentioned you, Maggie. I told them you want to go to the next Olympics!

Opening ceremonies for Jazzspace, love the theme and the opportunity to post first (although Theresa visited much earlier today). Is there a theme song/anthem in the background?

As to the Olympics, our family watched some, but not all of the Opening Ceremonies. Our time involved rejoicing in the costuming (the girls liked the pink dresses and those in green with lights), trying to explain Communism (the regular return to Mao's pic and Brokaw helped), the relationship of various countries (violence in Georgia will be on our list today), critiquing commercials (watch out NBC fall line-up, Ford trucks, Budweiser), and choosing sleep over a late night of festivities.

What an opportunity to discuss art (dance, dove/peace, dress, lights, etc in the bird's next), history, world politics, and critique our culture through the lens of Gospel. Let the games begin!

We hope to watch some rowing this afternoon and swimming tonight. Looking forward to your steady stream of commentary ;-)

I am a gold medal level Olympic viewer. I would like to see archery and equestrian events in prime time.

I love your blog! Keep up the good work....VNJ
